Fan-tastic

Technology moves at an alarming rate, and whilst new technologies are bounding ahead sometimes integration with existing tech or products can present challenges. We found this to be the case with ceiling fans and smart switches.

We have been offering Australian certified light switched and power points for some time. We even have a fan switch combo available for a while. The problem is most ceiling fans use capacitors at both the control switch and in the fan. And this presents a problem.

Most smart fan switches available scale power from 1-100%, and while this is OK for some fan types, these types don’t work with the majority of AC ceiling fans in Australia. If you use these electronic controllers you’re likely to notice a significant hum or buzz at both the fan controller and fan motor. You may also notice the fan won’t drive or spin as hard as it typically does. Any sparky will tell you this could burn out your motor or even worse, cause a fire.

We even found some switches have preset loads such as 30% (low), 60% (Med) and 100% (high). But these were just trying to create a workaround, and in any instance, the fan would still hum or underdrive.

Our research discovered that people were trying to create workarounds of their own, such as putting a two gang smart switch in front of their fan. One gang for the ceiling fan light and the other gang wired to the traditional fan switch and capacitor. Others were buying fans with a remote and RF capabilities and using a 3rd party RF controller.

Our belief has always been home automation should be simple. Devices should have traditional controls as well as smarts. Why shouldn’t you be able to turn a fan on and off at the wall, whilst having the option to control and schedule it from your phone, or even via your voice assistant?

We set about finding a solution that works with new and old fans alike, no hum, no buzz, and no compromise.

iSwitchOz is proud to introduce our latest fan/light switch. We solved the exiting problem by using a smart switch with a capacitor. Our smart switches control the supply of electricity to your existing fan capacitor. By reusing your existing fan capacitor (or purchasing one with your switch) you’re retaining your manufacturers' components and compatibility.

iSwitchOz fan/light controllers present you with a 3 button fan and one button light switch in one beautiful glass switch that matches our existing range. We are so confident that our solution will work with any AC ceiling fan that we offer a 100% money-back guarantee.

Many Australian homes have ceiling fans, in fact, some homes can have up to 10 ceiling fans. This missing piece now allows homeowners the ability to control their lights and ceiling fans too.
